Zuma at Simola charity gala

KNYSNA NEWS - The president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma dashed in to Knysna at Simola’s Golf & Country Estate on Saturday, May 14, to attend the evening’s gala dinner as part of MTN’s SuperSport Shootout which took place over the past weekend.
Zuma’s attendance was reportedly asto the fact that he is the patron of one of the charities which will benefit from funds raised during the event, The Jacob G Zuma Educational Trust.
One of the 120 participating VIP guests, former Bok wing, Breyton Paulse, walked away with the trophy as the winner in the eight edition of the MTN Supersport Shootout. Trailing in second place was fellow Bok, Werner Greeff, who carded a superb one-under 71 on Sunday for a nett 69 and a one-over total of 145.
Paulse doubled his trophy haul for the weekend by winning the Betterball Competition by ten shots with partner Riyadh Peer of Polo, combining for a 19-under-par total.
According to Celebrity Golf Shootout Pty Limited of Durban, the owners and organisers of the event, celebrity athletes were well represented this year, with seven of them occupying spaces in the top 11.
Fullback in the 1995 Rugby World Cup-winning side, Andre Joubert, finished in a tie for fourth (four over off his three handicap); boxing's Corrie Sanders was in a tie for sixth at six over; 1995 captain, Francois Pienaar, was one further back, and Bok legend Gary Teichmann was tied for ninth with former world surf-ski champion Oscar Chalupsky.
"Once again the event was a roaring success, with President Jacob Zuma's visit helping raise over R5 million through pledges and the auction, with his RDP Education Trust and the Gozololo Centre for Needy Children benefiting from the very charitable ways of the contestants," states Celebrity Golf Shootout Pty Limited on their official website.
"All of our guests are VIP’s, either the CEO’s or chairperson of their company, government official or a sporting celebrity who has played for South Africa," said the event’s owner and organiser, who wishes to remain anonymous.
Security on Simola’s estate was tight, but everyone nonetheless in high spirits. "Its an honour for us to make sure our president’s visit here is nothing but enjoyable and safe," said the visible pleased head of Knysna police, Col Nolan Michaels in their security quarters on the premises.
The President was welcomed by Nokuthula Ngubane and Sizwe Shezi, both of the RDP Educational Trust as he and his entourage made their entrance at Simola around 17:35. Even the singer, Kurt Darren, was spotted among guests, humming a tune as he settled at Naas Botha’s table where festivities were well under way. Among the other sport stars were Percy Montgomery and Chester Williams.
